• il traffico dati generato da PC è cresciuto del 1300% dal 2006 al 2007 (chissa cosa è successo quest’anno) mentre quello da cellulare “solo” del 160%.

La strategia di portare internet sui cellulari sembra vacillare, servono nuovi concept unitari per i devices o va bene così: un laptop nello zaino ed uno smartphone nel taschino dei jeans?

Quello di cui sono sicuro è che ancora non abbiamo visto il bello di internet! Altro che “Y Generation”: i veri nativi della ubiquità digitale devono ancora nascere… tra 10 anni i 5enni di oggi se la rideranno della goffagine del nostro Web 2.0.

Youth smoking falls with rising mobile phone ownership

Now that’s a wacky statistic, but it’s the fifth “key fact” from the MobileYouth survey posted by Graham Brown at mobileyouth.org.

This is a global study that includes other interesting facts like:

• 1.1 billion youths own a mobile phone
• 10% of youths’ disposable income goes to mobile products and services
• Youth spending on mobile will reach $300B by 2010
• Youths spend 8 times more on mobile than on music
• Only 27% of youth said they “trusted” their mobile operator

Qual’è il vantaggio evolutivo dell’apprendimento? Quanto è importante per la specie essere “intelligenti? Sono questioni interessantissime (mi veniva in mente “esteticamente irresistibili”) che riassumo in poche righe per arrivare ad una considerazione parallela. Non sempre la velocità di apprendimento è un vantaggio competitivo per la specie (od il gruppo isolato sottoposto a selezione). Sembra che la velocità di apprendimento si paghi a livello genetico con una maggiore “fragilità della specie”. Adattarsi alle circostanze paga ma espone anche a dei rischi, direi, di “stabilità”.

Ma in contesto differente da quello biologico o delle scienze cognitive, valgono principi simili? Ad esempio, qual’è il prezzo che paga in termini di rischio un ecosistema di aziende strutturate unicamente per adattarsi al mercato, innovando rapidamente quando le risorse a disposizione diventano scarse?

Prospettiva decisamente allarmante, visto che gli SMS costituiscono una fonte di revenues importante per gli operatori mobili e la quasi totalità di quelle dei cosiddetti Servizi a Valore Aggiunto. La tendenza alla “Webizzazione” dei servizi è in fase di forte accelerazione e non ni sembra che gli operatori mobili stiano esprimendo strategie consone. Inoltre gli SMS come la Voce sono tra i i pochissimi servizi cross-piattaforma (standardizzati tra diversi operatori). Gli altri VAS hanno una valenza locale e non sono altrettanto appetibili per l’utente finale.

Personalmente ho cominciato ad usare Fring che integra in un’unica applicazione i servizi di voce, IM e Presence di Skype, MSN, Google Talk (Jabber), Twitter, ICQ e Yahoo!. Certo, la deriva non sarà velocissima, ma coinvolgerà per primi i top users e gli adolescenti. L’impatto non sarà solo economico. Infatti i sistemi come Fring trasformano la dinamica del SMS in una più complessa dove diventa centrale la gestione della presence del positioning e del “wath are you doing” aumentando il livello di interazione e di coesione delle community.

Attualmente l’8 per cento di tutti gli utenti mobili del mondo usa i MIM. Il Paese dove ci sono più early adopter è Hong Kong, dove il 23 per cento degli utenti mobili utilizza i Mobile Instant Messaging al posto dei “vecchi” messaggini e delle mail. I dati provengono da una ricerca della società TNS Global Telecoms Insight (GTI), che ha intervistato 17 mila utenti di 30 nazioni differenti e che celebra questa nuova modalità comunicativa come una soluzione destinata ad avere sempre più successi, a discapito degli altri sistemi tradizionali. L’utenza MIM è infatti maggiormente differenziata e fidelizzata rispetto al popolo degli sms e delle mail. Secondo i dati dello studio, tra gli utenti dei Mobile Instant Messaging, il 61 per cento utilizza quotidianamente i MIM, il 55 per cento fa uso quotidiano degli sms e solo il 12 per cento utilizza tutti i giorni la posta virtuale per comunicare. UK businesses of all sizes can now turn their premises into wireless broadband (Wi-Fi) hotspots, expanding the range of services they offer to customers and visitors, and potentially creating a new revenue stream, thanks to the latest initiative from BT Business Total Broadband.

For the first time in the UK, businesses with BT Business Total Broadband can turn their BT Business Hub into a BT Openzone wireless hotspot at no cost. This will allow anyone visiting their premises, be it an office, shop, restaurant or depot, to log on to a separate secure internet channel to check e-mail, surf the web, use internet-enabled applications and make Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) calls.

Customer research highlights that more than a quarter (28 per cent) of small businesses believe offering visitors access to telephones and desks improves relationships and ultimately, business. Only seven per cent however, currently offer Wi-Fi. BT Business Hub owners will now be able to offer Wi-Fi access, and even opt to sell BT Openzone vouchers to allow their visitors to use the service.

IMHO il futuro ci riserverà laptop sempre più portatili e leggeri, senza rinunciare ad una buona decina di pollici di schermo. Quello che conta è il peso (vedi Air).

Certo… è un pesce d’Aprile…. ma mica tanto. Se ogni cellulare facesse da ripetitore per quelli che cadono nella sua copertura si potrebbe creare una enorme rete mash senza operatore. Le tecnologie ci sono tutte (qualche tempo fa con un amico, che non cito, abbiamo molto approfondito il tema) ed è tutt’altro che irrealizzabile!

Take your mobile phone signal with you, wherever you go

By now just about everyone has caught onto the idea of femtocells – mini access points that create a family-sized 3G cell at home. But what happens when you leave your home and there’s still no mobile signal? Enter the “attocell” – a tiny phone attachment that creates a person-sized 3G cell that you can carry around with you.

Pioneering cellular infrastructure companies have secretly been working on attocell technology for months, and the first prototypes are ready for testing. One of these companies is ip.access, which has developed a 3G attocell attachment for the iPhone based on its award-winning Oyster 3G femtocell technology. As well as creating its own cellular signal, the attocell has the added advantage of making the iPhone 3G capable.

The potential of attocells is huge, according to ip.access CEO Stephen Mallinson. “Where I live, there’s no mobile phone signal for miles around, except for a tiny patch at the corner of my bed,” he says. “With the attocell, I am no longer tethered to the bed, and can use my mobile phone anywhere in the house, the garden, or the entire village.”
